The Importance Of Researching A Cleaning Service

You Never Forget The First Time!

Let’s face it. No one enjoys cleaning their home day after day. However, it is a necessary evil unless you want to live in filth and be featured on the television show, Hoarders!

So what about getting some extra help by hiring a cleaning service? This means that you will have to pay a monetary sum to a stranger or two to enter your home and do all the dusting and vacuuming. Many people swear by these cleaning services and always have a spotless house.

I do believe that a good cleaning service is invaluable. However, a good one can be hard to find. My first experience did not instill confidence in the process.

I do believe that a good cleaning service is invaluable. However, a good one can be hard to find. My first experience did not instill confidence in the process.

A NOT So Good Experience!

I was around twelve years old when my mother decided to try a cleaning service for the first time. She was very particular about her home and was a motivated cleaner. In fact, our house was the envy of friends and neighbors due to the incredible cleanliness it offered.

But my mother was working full-time and was making money for the first time in her life. She decided after much hand-wringing to give it a try.

She called the first person in the yellow pages and hired them on the spot. No reference check, very little discussion, just an agreement to show up at 8 am the next day.

Since it was summer, I was the only one home the next morning. I anxiously awaited the guest, hopeful that my cleaning days were over for good. 8 came and went with no sign of the cleaner. Finally at 8:30, a black car pulled into the driveway and a rather large woman got out.

She introduced herself as the cleaning lady and followed me into the house. I showed her where everything was and headed out to play with a friend.

A couple of hours later, we stopped by to see how it was going. The lady was sitting in front of the television watching, “The Price Is Right.” I assumed she was taking a break. We headed back outside only to return at lunch.

We entered the kitchen and found this lady sitting at the breakfast bar eating pretty much everything that was in the refrigerator while managing to watch a soap opera intensely.

Finding nothing left but peanut butter, we made a sandwich and again headed out the door.
I came home around 2 and the cleaning lady had apparently finished cleaning as the house was empty and her car, gone.

However, she had left a note that read, “your dog pooped in the floor of the master bedroom!”

Sure enough, there was a small present from our poodle on the hardwood in my parents room.

The Final Verdict?

My mother was not amused of course and she never mentioned cleaning companies again. It would be thirty years before I would give in and hire someone. But this time, I got plenty of referrals and positive comments along with internet reviews before making a decision. And the result is quite possibly the best decision I have ever made. My house stays in a perpetual state of cleanliness, even the bathroom.

So if you are smart and thorough before hiring, a cleaning service is a fantastic investment!
